Modern vehicles are equipped with remote controls that can be used to lock, unlock and start the vehicle. Like any other high-tech piece of equipment, there are problems.

These are usually very easy to fix. It's as simple as resetting it, which you should be able do by following the instructions for resetting in the owner's manual.

Check the Battery

The remote control is powered by the battery that is in a key fob. It's a tiny and affordable part that needs to be replaced frequently to ensure that the fob's function is maintained. There are a variety of reasons your key fob might not be functioning properly, besides the battery. Physical damage, water exposure or internal component failure could be the cause. If your key fob's battery has stopped working, replace the battery.

First, ensure you have the right size battery. Nearly all modern key fobs utilize the standard CR2032 three-volt battery that's easily available at many stores. The size of most of these batteries is engraved on the edge of the key fob. You can find the kind of battery your car requires by searching for the brand name.

Open your key fob carefully and take out the original battery. Take a photo of the inside of the fob prior to you do this to make sure you put it back together in the correct way. This simple trick will prevent you from buying an entirely new fob if you make an error when making it back together.

It is important to be aware that some key fobs include a backup mechanical key, called an emergency blade. The key blade is situated within the key fob and it lets you open the door to the driver's side of your vehicle in the event that the remote control is not working. To open the blade of the key, locate the notch in the middle of the fob. The notch is usually a circular shape that is concealed by the fob's plastic casing.

If you'd like to test the battery's voltage with more care, use the multimeter. The majority of modern key fobs have built-in voltmeters, but you can buy a multimeter from most hardware shops for a few dollars. The battery should generally read at 3.0 volts or greater. A reading lower than that could mean that the battery is at its end and requires replacement immediately.

Check the Buttons

They may appear to be modern, high-tech items of convenience, but keys for cars aren't impervious to destruction. It isn't unusual for these remotes to cease working after a while, especially when the vehicle is used frequently or if there is an excessive amount of physical abuse associated with it. Fortunately, a majority of the times it's easy to diagnose and fix a problem with the remote key fob and replacing the battery is typically all that is required.

The majority of modern car key fobs feature several buttons that can be used for various purposes including locking and unlocking doors, activating the panic button, and opening the trunk. When a button is pressed, the fob sends an audio signal using the code that is interpreted by a receiver inside the car. Some fobs also come with a button that will start the engine, which can be especially handy during cold winter mornings or hot summer days.

Typically, the buttons of keys can be reset by simply snapping the device apart and then checking to ensure they're not broken or stuck. Key fobs aren't typically designed to be disassembled, but the battery connectors on a key fob can be loose as time passes. If the contacts on the button have been disconnected from the circuit board and need to be soldered, a simple job is enough to get them back in place and allow the fob back to full function.

In addition, if the fob was damaged or dropped in any other way, the buttons may be damaged or out of alignment, or misaligned in any way. Keep a spare key fob an area that is secure in case the one you use frequently stops working. You can avoid being stranded in the middle of nowhere without keys, or having to pay an enormous amount to have the vehicle towed to the dealer. Also, you should examine your insurance policy for your car, car club membership or extended warranty coverage to determine whether it covers the cost of programming or replacing a new fob.

Check the Casing

It's not common for keys to get wet, whether from a pool, storm or even your washing machine. The moisture that is resulting can cause a variety of issues with the electronic components. It's important to be aware that you can save your automotive key repair fob from dying by following a couple of simple steps and drying it thoroughly.

The first step is to make sure the buttons are working correctly. This usually involves taking out the buttons, cleaning them and rebuilding them. If the buttons don't pop back in or are stuck, it's time to replace the remote.

It is also important to inspect the case to make sure there is nothing that could be affecting the operation of the key fob. Open the case with tweezers and take out the battery. Don't remove the circuit board or antennas. If you damage the circuits that keep your key fob's programming you'll need to visit an Interstate All Battery Center or dealer to reprogram it.

After you have replaced and removed your battery, it is recommended to dry the key fob out by putting it in an airtight bag that contains silica gel packets. This will prevent future issues with moisture and will help your key fob last longer.

Check the Connections

Sometimes your key fob may cease to function - even though it's still programmed to your vehicle. This could be due various reasons, including broken battery terminal contacts or buttons. You could be able to solve the issue yourself by performing basic maintenance.

The first thing to do is ensure that your backup remote is able to lock and unlock the doors of your car. If it does it, then you might have an issue with your primary remote. If you can't, then it's time to try replacing the battery in the backup remote.

It's a great idea take apart your key fob prior to replacing the battery and inspect the circuit board. Make sure there are no cracked solder joints. After you've finished you can replace your key fob battery and reassemble it.

Once you've replaced the battery and reassembled the key fob, it's now time to test its connection with your vehicle. This can be done by inserting a mini flathead screwdriver into the notch at the bottom of your key fob. From there, you can take apart the two parts of your key fob and gently remove the circuit board. Be careful when inserting a new CR 2032 3V battery, making sure that it is placed with the negative side facing down. If this does not resolve the issue, you might have a larger problem. In this case, you will need to call your dealer or an independent service shop that is specialized in the make of your car.
