Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet format of previous albums. It was a stronger, more constant effort with an edge that was stronger than Hydra. Its edgier sound was indicative of the maturation of group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's increased ability on the drums and a more mature, confident vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work was sharper, more intricate, and less derivative than on previous recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released their new studio album just a few months after and then embarked on a tour around the world to support the album. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old demos and tapes in search of an album that would feature songs that were never recorded before. By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
