Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet arrangement of previous albums and was a stronger, more consistent effort that had a harder edge than Hydra. The more edgy sound of the album reflected the maturation of the group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's increased virtuosity on drums, and a more confident, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard playing was also more sophisticated, sharper, and less derivative on earlier efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live show in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a new studio album a few months later and then embarked on a tour around the world to promote it. During this period keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old tapes and demos for a new album featuring songs that had never been recorded before. By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
