We asked experts like Ladina Schopf, an interior designer architect, founder, and co-founder of LS Projects, for tips on how to select the best one. They considered the capacity of storage as well as layout and energy efficiency, among other aspects.

The fridge is equipped with 17 shelves and compartments. The refrigerator compartment is 18.5 cubic feet, which is standard for a French-door fridge at this price. It has a decent sized refrigerator with an ice maker in the left door. However it's not the most spacious one I've seen.

You can alter the shelves in both compartments to create custom storage setup for the items you need to store. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS is attractive. Its LED lighting is a nice feature and the storage bins have an additional shelf that folds down to make it possible to store tall items. The drawers are equipped with temperature controls so that you can set them to Meat, Beverage or Deli settings. The drawers are simple to shut and open however I found the textured plastic coatings to be a bit rough on my fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator is equipped with a full suite of features you'd expect from a refrigerator at this price with Wi-Fi and app support through GE's SmartHQ software. The app is available on iOS and Android devices and lets you control your refrigerator from anywhere around the world. It also comes with numerous options for customizing. It also sends you notifications when doors are left open, when your fridge or freezer is in need of defrosting, and when it's time to change the filter.

It would be nice if the GE PYE22PYNFS had Precise Fill, an option available in a few other GE refrigerators that allows you to choose how many cups of water you'd like to disperse at a time. It also has an indicator on the fridge display to show how much water you have left, but it's not as useful as Precise Fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

Designed to look like a seamless piece of your kitchen Bosch's french style fridge freezers door refrigerator is a standout. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also has a vegetable compartment that keeps fruits and vegetables fresher for longer periods, and dual compressors to preserve food items. The ice maker we tested was one of the most efficient and makes the shape of a pyramid using only water. This fridge is ideal for a single household or a kitchenette with an elegant design and top of the line food preservation.

This fridge was rated as the most efficient in our Refrigerators Test for a variety of reasons. The temperature of the freezer remained constant at just above 0°F and never changed more than a fraction - this is essential to avoid freezer burn. The fridge section of the fridge also performed well, achieving the desired initial set temperature within an hour and keeping that temperature steady over the course of our tests.

Bosch is known for its premium appliances, so it's no surprise that this counter-depth refrigerator is also a smart appliance, with the option to connect to your home Wi-Fi as well as Bosch's Home Connect platform. The Smart InstaView feature is neat however it doesn't improve the efficiency of the fridge. This fridge took longer to defrost food and chill it than other models we tested. This could be due to its bigger capacity.

The doors are a different issue with this refrigerator. They have sunken handles on the front that allow shorter people to easily open them from the bottom, but they're difficult for taller people to steer closed without slamming them. It would have been better if they came with a front-mounted handle.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX is a ideal choice for those who want to combine the benefits of a fridge with a French door with an efficient layout. Its capacity is higher than average for a counter-depth model, and it cools evenly and has a great layout. It's also less expensive than the most expensive counter depth refrigerators that have an ice maker, making it a great choice.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

If you're looking for an French door fridge that doesn't cost a fortune and isn't expensive, this Frigidaire is a solid option. It's a minimalist design that's not as visually striking as some of the competition, but it has enough features that make it a great option. Its most notable feature is the adjustable temperature drawer helps to keep food like vegetables and meat fresher for longer. It also comes with a huge water dispenser, as well as an excellent ice maker that operates quickly.

Another feature that is worth mentioning is the "Chill Drawer" that sits above the two crisper bins. This drawer lets you divert a portion of the fridge's cooling power directly to this area, so you can put away food items that require special attention. This feature can be adjusted by using a slider on the outside of the drawer. You can also alter the general cooling settings for the entire fridge. I've found that the generic settings are more effective than the specific ones.

In my tests, the refrigerator's temperatures stayed fairly consistent across different areas of the refrigerator. The temperatures in the top, bottom and middle of the refrigerator did not differ much from 38 degrees. This is a solid performance, but it does not quite make it to the top of our ratings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. You can also pair this fridge with an intelligent thermometer to get more precise measurements of your fridge's internal temperature.

The Frigidaire FGHB2866PF's exterior is constructed of stainless steel with a grey body that has a "smudge-proof" finish. It is capable of repelling fingerprints and streaks, even compared to glossier stainless steel finishes on other appliances I've tried.
