Vauxhall has finally addressed the issue with the Rocks Air. This is an upgraded version of the car, which is now available in a variety of trim levels.

While the Rocks Air looks like a great idea on paper, it's not really what we expected from a car that's billed as a 'performance-orientated' model. It's a pretty car, but it feels surprisingly under-powered when you drive it. It's not very comfortable either and the ride is more spongy than you would expect from a small car, and suspension that is tuned to handle thrills-a-minute, instead of everyday comfort.

Things get better when you leave town, and the light steering that was so convenient in town is more responsive in cars with sports suspension, but it still doesn't inspire confidence in the corners. Even competitors like the MINI and DS3 are more comfortable to drive than Adam.

The visibility is also limited due to the sloping windshield and bulky pillars either side, making it difficult for you to see your shoulder. The Rocks S would have benefited from parking sensors in the rear, but none of the versions we tested had them.

If you're in the market for a second-hand Vauxhall Adam, prices start at around PS7000 for the most affordable 1.2-litre models in Jam and Glam trim. The ones with the most powerful engine in the lineup, which is found in Slam models, start at around PS17,500. There are also lots of models with the more powerful 1.4-litre turbo in Energised and S trims on our list. They're more expensive, but they'll give you plenty of performance for your budget. The insurance groupings for these engines are also low. The less-than-stellar 1.2 engine is in group 2 while the more powerful turbocharged 1.4 Liters in S trims fall into group 15.
