Overview

A significant makeover of the estate at the University of East London (UEL) is under way as part of the institution's Vision 2028 development strategy. This aims to reinvent UEL through increased collaboration with industry partners, equipping students with more of the skills employers need and empowering them to achieve career success. This is being steadily rolled out for one of the most socially inclusive student populations in any university. UEL occupies several sites, principally the Docklands campus overlooking the historic Royal Docks and the new University Square Stratford, home to UEL's Institute of Performing Arts. A further older (but soon to be redeveloped) campus, also in Stratford, is home to the school of education and communities, where most teacher training takes place. There are six academic schools in total, all offering job-focused courses which employers have helped design. UEL is one of only 10 universities to be given the University Mental Health Charter Award by the charity Student Minds, which recognises excellent practice in mental health and wellbeing.

Paying the bills

With nearly £2.8m spent last year on bursaries and scholarships, and a further £1.4m on hardship support, there is plenty of financial help available. A limited number of Vice Chancellor's scholarships are awarded annually, offering full tuition fee remission or the £27,750 cash equivalent to students who demonstrate academic excellence, financial need and a commitment to UEL's values. Hardship bursaries, meanwhile, benefited 1,519 students from low-income households last year. The sum each received was assessed according to need, with a £3,000 maximum payment. Engagement bursaries with the same top limit assist students in danger of dropping out due to childcare or travel costs, or help with computer costs for those in receipt of Disabled Students' Allowance. Just under 600 of these awards were made last year. Students admitted from local partner schools can be nominated for a £1,000 scholarship payable in the first year only, while sports scholarships can be worth up to £6,000 a year. The 1,160 places in student accommodation are priced competitively (for London), starting at £6,293 for a 38-week tenancy in a standard room and rising to £8,389 for 38 weeks in a studio.

What's new?

Work will be completed on upgrading UEL's clinical education building, with its hospital and primary care training hub, in time for the new intake of students in September 2025. New multipurpose rooms will feature mock wards, podiatry and physiotherapy spaces and private consultation rooms, and the existing operating theatre will have pre-operation, scrub-up and recovery rooms added to it. Elsewhere, an open-plan eating area known as The Green Room will be created in the Arthur Edwards building, sitting alongside a new Students' Union space. UEL's successful bid to become the new cultural operator of the Stratford Youth Zone will lead to the formation of a commercial theatre venue for students and the local community, while a wide-ranging overhaul of UEL's Stratford campus has been approved recently by Newham council. The masterplan involves creating a health campus, a student village with 650 rooms, a wellness centre, a student and staff nursery and green social spaces. Construction is expected to begin in the coming weeks. Nineteen new degrees have been approved for next September, with some of the more striking options including directing for 다파벳가입 stage and screen, international sport with enterprise, policing studies, and criminal justice and cyber security.

Admissions, teaching and student support

While UEL does not make contextual offers, it does more than most to give applicants a foothold in higher education. There are numerous foundation year options open to those who do not have the grades to immediately gain a place on a degree programme. The university's flexible approach to admissions takes account of a wide range of professional and other qualifications that fall outside the Ucas tariff, as well as work experience. Portfolios, auditions and interviews play an important part in UEL's selection process. Its innovative New Beginnings short course also provides a way into higher education for mature learners and those without formal qualifications. Outreach staff engage with local further education colleges and run subject-specific summer schools to allow prospective students to 'try before they buy' when considering whether to go to university. UEL's award-winning mental health and wellbeing package (see Overview, above) features both proactive and reactive services. As well as stress-management programmes, counselling and appointments available in person, via Microsoft Teams and by telephone, the university runs lifestyle programmes at the UEL SportsDock to help prevent problems arising. Additionally, its professional fitness and mental wealth programme is embedded in all courses to help students thrive after they leave university. More than 200 unique modules teach soft skills such as critical thinking, digital proficiency, emotional intelligence and resilience to give students the confidence to succeed in work and life.
