Buying a Pram Newborn

Parents and caregivers can count on prams and pushchairs that can be versatile and multi-functional. They're the co-pilots in the new journey of your child.

A pram for newborns is designed for newborns and babies. It has an incredibly sturdy, deep carrycot with soft and safe walls.

A pram will typically come with a bassinet. However, it can be transformed into an infant stroller newborn seat once baby is ready.

Safety

Newborns must be protected to the greatest extent possible. Buying a pram or stroller with safety features will ensure that your baby is comfortable and safe during their travels. The essential requirements for any pram or stroller are a functioning brake, a five-point safety harness (2 shoulder straps, 2 waist straps and the strap for the crotch) and an adjustable wrist tether strap for the person who is pushing the pram. Check that your chosen pram is in compliance with these requirements before you buy.

Find a pram which allows your baby to ride in the recommended lying-flat position. This position is supportive for your baby and helps prevent the risk of a dangerous curve in their spine that could cause spinal issues. By keeping the airways open, it decreases the chance of SUID (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or Asphyxiation). The majority of prams that can be used from birth will have an infant seat that can recline to a lay-flat pram mode for infants and transform into a pushchair unit for older children.

The suspension of a pram will determine how smooth it is. A pram that has lots of spring suspension will cost more however, it's worth the extra expense in the event that you plan to use your pram each day for a couple of years or more.

It is important to take the time to read the instruction manual and look over the warning labels on your pram or stroller. You should also make sure that your pram is parked in a secure location free of bicycles, traffic or any other dangers when it isn't being used. It is also important to remove any bags or other items from the handles, since they could cause your baby to get trapped or even suffocate.

Even if the baby seems asleep, it's not an ideal idea to leave a pram or stroller unattended. They may squirm into the toddler stroller and become trapped, or slide away and cause injury. It's not a good idea to hang bags or other things off the handles as they may fall and strike your baby's head.

Comfort

Having the option of lie flat seating is a must for newborns, because it helps improve lung and back development. Many prams have a carrycot or cocoon that creates a warm nest-like space for your infant and can be easily removed from the frame. Other models, such as the egg2's bucket style seat do not recline to lay flat, but they still offer a comfortable ride for your baby.

Some prams have an additional bassinet or seat for infants. This lets you easily switch between the sleeping and sitting positions depending on the needs of your baby. It is often referred to as a "travel system" and is the first setup you should test out with your Baby Accessories.

Find a pram that has two shoulder straps (ideally with padding) and a sturdy five-point safety harness that fits your child's body safely. Make sure there aren't any gaps, or loose areas where fingers can be trapped. Also, ensure that the buckles are easy for older children to use. Also, consider if you'd like an adult-facing pram. It is great to keep an eye on your child and makes them feel more secure by seeing their parents.

If you're in the market for a travel system, be sure that the frame is compatible with your car capsule and this will prevent you from having to wake them up when changing between car, pram and back again.

Convenience

It is essential to consider your baby's transportation needs when purchasing a baby pram. Some prams have an infant bassinet, carrycot or a seat that reclines to a flat position. This is important for your baby's spinal development and breathing. It's also a good idea to take a look at the other accessories are included in the pram, such as the footmuff and changing bag which are essential for keeping your baby warm in colder weather.

It's important to note that some strollers and prams pushchairs can be converted into travel systems, which allows you to connect a car capsule with the frame using adaptors, to allow you to easily transfer your child between the car and the pushchair without needing to awake them. These are great when you have a busy schedule or you don't have enough space in your car boot to accommodate a pram. However, it is important to be aware that you will need to wait until your baby is old enough to sit up independently before you transform them from a car capsule to triple pushchair.

You should also be able to keep bags for shopping and changing in the basket underneath. It should be possible to store shopping bags and changing bags beneath the pram (but remember that too much weight could cause it to tip over).
