Buying a Convertible Single to Double Stroller

There are few things more exciting than hearing that you're expecting your second child. But the process of preparing your family for this new addition comes with its own set of challenges.

One of these is selecting the right double pram for your needs. This article will cover the different options available along with some suggestions to help you select the best pram for your growing family.

Convertible double prams

A convertible single to double stroller is a great option for those who want a stroller that can grow with your family. They also have the option of adding a shopping basket, or two carrycots/carseats (with upper and lower adapters). This allows you to begin your family with a single buggy, and then expand when you have twins. They usually have more configurations and seating options for both children than other types of double prams, and offer better weight distribution, so they are generally easier to maneuver. Pros: Easy to use, compact travel stroller and versatile. Cons: Less storage space and less space for both children compared to other designs.

Tandem (in-line) double prams

As the name suggests, tandem prams have two bassinets or seats that are positioned one in front of the other. Tandem prams are typically smaller than side by side double prams, and are easier to manoeuvre through doorways and on public transport. However they don't offer the same amount of storage space and may be more difficult to access when both seats are in use in the case of a toddler who is in the front seat.

Many first-time parents opt for tandem strollers to protect their investment in case they have children with the same age. Tandem prams come in a variety of configurations. For instance an infant can be put in a bassinet that is located at the top of the pram, while an older child sits on the seat below. Most tandem prams are able to be converted into a travel pushchair system by adding an automobile capsule to the top seat.

To give you the maximum flexibility, a side-by-side double pram allows both kids to enjoy the ride together and interact as they go. This will prevent them from wake each other up.

A side-by-side can be the perfect choice for grandparents who want to join in the fun. They can push both kids around, and help with shopping, running errands or attending events. They're usually cheaper than tandem prams, making them an excellent choice for grandparents who want to help with babysitting.

Single prams

A single pram is only able to allow for 1 seat or bassinet/carry-cot. It is typically suitable from newborn through to approx. 4 years old. A lot of single prams allow for a toddler board to be attached to the back, so that a second child can stand or sit (depending on the type of toddler stroller board) while you push the stroller forward.

Some parents who are new to the family decide to secure their pram for the future purchase by buying a double option like our DUO2. This means that you can use the pram newborn double (hyperlink) in single mode while you have one child and then convert it into a tandem double pram once bub number two is born. This can save you the expense and hassle of having to purchase an additional double pram.

In-line or tandem double prams may be a bit wider than side-byside double prams however they are still a lot more maneuverable on busy sidewalks and inside shops. However, they are more difficult to use while running and will require more effort to push when you're climbing or descending hills.

Side by side prams are larger than tandem or in-line double prams, but they are a good option when you are planning to have two children who are similar in age. They will be able to see and interact with each other from their seats. They are less maneuverable than tandem strollers and might not pass through standard doors as easily.

Side-by-side prams that are not convertible cannot be used in single mode. You'll have to buy another pram or a stroller for your younger children. They are cheaper and last longer than convertible double strollers because they weren't designed to be used both in double and single mode. The main downside is that your older child will quickly outgrow the side-byside seat and will need to be moved to a toddler seat which could be costly.
