Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and other receivers who are based on possession are at the bottom of the list. They're more effective on shorter and intermediate routes than deep zones. For instance for instance, the Eagles Alshon Jeffery is the leader in the league in the number of targets per game (4.8) but is only sixth in the slot receiving score (58.5). This is because most of his targets have come from the outside and it's hard to gain a first down on a wide-open, deep route in that situation.

On the other hand, some receivers excel at playing inside and can't do much on the outer. Robby Anderson, for example, was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He ran 74% of his routes in the slot, as opposed to only 26% of his boundary routes. This is an enormous difference that shows how much more productive Robby Anderson is when he's aligned with the slot.

Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, is in the middle of the field most of his passing downs and has one of the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). However, he also played 51% of his perimeter routes last season, and is a star in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers are more effective when they line up inside. They can be targeted further down the field, and are often swarmed by one-on-1 coverage. That's why you'll see names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans and Amari Cooper on the top five spots of our list.

On the flip side we have some outstanding slot cornerbacks such as McDuffie and Moore in this group. McDuffie is the top player in the NFL in forced fumbles with seven, while Moore has the highest tackle-stop efficiency (-3.5) on this list. Spagnuolo increased McDuffie's capabilities by putting his slot to play nickel and dime packages and then shifting him to the outside while playing base defense. Moore's ability to stop big run plays is an enormous benefit when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While top NFL receivers like Golden Tate, Larry Fitzgerald, and Baldwin excel on the perimeter, their slot counterparts are just as good. Wide receivers who have high slot grades score touchdowns about the same as those on the perimeter. This is mostly because quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to slot and outside receivers than to other inside options such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

That's why it's interesting to see a receiver such as CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022 because he plays the slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of them. He's actually running more routes in the slot than most of the players listed on this chart. This is a great way to gain matchup advantages for your team. It also helps explain why Lamb is the most highly-rated receiver in our system.

Lamb also plays at the X-position and makes big plays outside. Lamb isn't nearly as explosive as the players in this ranking but he's highly skilled and is a great match for the Cowboys' scheme.

Mecole Hardman is another example of a player capable of putting up big numbers on both kinds of targets. He has a high slot receiver grade and is one of the league's top players at catching back-shoulder throws, but he's also an excellent contested-catch threat.

Another player on this list that's a slot specialist in the true sense is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton, who has lined up in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays this season. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA among cornerbacks aligned in the slot, which makes him a crucial player in the defense of his team. He's had a difficult time stopping passes from the outside and his EPA against this type of target is negative. This has been a result of playing alongside unsafe linebackers who don't have the same size, speed and route-running ability.
