Speedy wideouts are the main benefits of moving into the slot, since they have an easier time getting open in the field when their route isn't covered by a linebacker or cornerback. Corey Coleman is the only wide receiver who's not a speedy wideout but would benefit from more slot work. He's a solid target for short and intermediate routes.

Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and other receivers who are based on possession are at the low end of the list. They're more effective on shorter and intermediate routes than in deep areas. Jeudy is a good option to be a sleeper for this season since he'll be the primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are largely expected to play on more downfield targets. Hamler should be able to excel on short-to-mid routes, as that's what he excelled at in 2021 when he played for the Bills. Hamler could be a fantastic replacement for departed wideout Jordan Matthews in Buffalo.

Percentage of Snaps In Slot

The proportion of snaps a receiver plays in the slot is a good indicator of their ability to play deep routes. It's not always an accurate reflection of a receiver's skills, as certain receivers are better in the slot, but they can't play further.

Alshon Jeffrey, for example leads the league in the number of targets he receives per game (4.8), but is only ranked 6th when it comes to slot receiving scores (58.5). This is due to the fact that most of his targets are from outside, and it's a challenge to make a first down on a wide-open, deep and wide-open route.

On the other hand, some receivers excel inside and aren't able to do much on the perimeter. Robby Anderson, for example was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He completed 74% of his routes in the slot, compared to just 26% on boundary routes. This is a huge difference and shows just how much more efficient Robby Anderson is when aligned to the slot.

Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, is in the middle of the field most of his passes and is among the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). However he also ran 51 percent of his perimeter routes last season and is a stud in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers are typically more efficient when they line up inside, as they are able to get targeted down the field, and often are in one-on-one coverage. This is why you'll find names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans, and Amari Cooper in the top five of our list.

McDuffie, Moore and other slot cornerbacks are also in this group. Both have been able create pressures during the passing game and have McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles. Moore having the best tackle stop performance on this list (-3.5). Spagnuolo increased McDuffie's capabilities by putting his slot for nickel and dime packs and then moving him to the outside while playing base defense. Moore's ability in stopping big run plays is an enormous advantage when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers like Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's important to note that their slot counterparts are just as good. As a whole wide receivers who have high slot receiving grades score touchdowns around the same amount as those who play on the edge. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to slot and outside receivers, compared to other inside options like tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

It's interesting to see a player such as CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in 3 WR sets, and flanker in 2 of the sets. He's running more routes in the slot than many of the players on this chart. This is a great method to gain matchup advantages for your team. It also helps to explain why Lamb is the highest-graded receiver in our system.

He also plays the X-position, and can make big plays outside. Lamb isn't as awe-inspiring as the players in this ranking however, he's an extremely high-quality receiver and is a great match for the Cowboys' scheme.

Mecole Hardman, a player who puts huge numbers with targets of all kinds is another example. He's among the best in the game at taking throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a superb player who can play contested catch.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is slot specialist. He's lined up in this position on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays so far this season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets, and the fifth-highest EPA for run stops among cornerbacks who play in the slot. This makes him a valuable player in the defensive line. On the other hand, he's had trouble to stop passes from the outside and has allowed the negative EPA against these types of targets. This is because he's been playing with linebackers and safety players who cannot compete with Hilton's speed, size or ability to run routes.
