The bottom of the list is populated by possession-based receivers who are better on intermediate and short routes than deep ones such as Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy is a good sleeper pick this year since the Rams' primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are expected to be involved in more downfield targets. Hamler will be a natural on short-to-mid-long and intermediate routes, since this is where he was at his best when playing for the Bills in 2021. He could be a great replacement for the departing wideout Jordan Matthews in Buffalo.

Percentage of Snaps In Slot

The percentage of snaps that a receiver takes in the slot could be a good indicator of their ability to run routes that are deep. It's not always a reliable indicator of a receiver's skills, as certain receivers are better in the slot, but they can't play more deep.

Alshon Jeffrey, for instance is the league leader in goals per game (4.8), but is only 6th in the position that scores (58.5). This is due to the fact that most of his targets come from the outside, and it's hard to gain a first down in a wide-open deep line in that situation.

Certain receivers are better playing inside, while others struggle on the outside. For instance the Panthers handed Robby Anderson 978 snaps this season, and he ran 74 percent of his slot routes as opposed to just 26% for boundary routes. That's a huge improvement and shows how much more productive Robby Anderson is when he's aligned in the slot.

Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, lines up inside most of his passing downs and has one of the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). He also played 51% of his perimeter routes and is an expert in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers are more efficient when they line up inside. They are able to be targeted further down the field, and often face one-on-one coverage. This is why you'll see names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans and Amari Cooper in the top software providers for slots five of our list.

On the flip side, we've got some great slot cornerbacks like McDuffie and Moore in this group. Both have been able create pressures in the pass game with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles. Moore having the best tackle stop performance on this list (-3.5). Spagnuolo increased McDuffie's capabilities by placing his slot to play nickel and dime packs and then moving him to the outside when playing base defense. Moore's ability in stopping big run plays is a major asset when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While top NFL receivers like Golden Tate, Larry Fitzgerald, and Baldwin excel on the perimeter but their slot counterparts are also equally good. As a whole, wide receivers with high slot receiving grades score touchdowns roughly at the same rate as players who are on the edge. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to slot and outside receivers than to other inside options like tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

It's therefore fascinating to see a receiver such as CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in 3 WR sets and flanker in two of them. Lamb is running more routes in the slot than many of the players on this chart. This is an excellent opportunity to increase matchup benefits for your team. It also helps to explain why Lamb is the highest-graded receiver in our system.

Of course, he plays the X position and makes big plays from the perimeter too. Lamb isn't nearly as explosive as the other players in this ranking, but he's still an extremely high-quality receiver and is a great match for the Cowboys' scheme.

Mecole Hardman is yet another example of a player capable of putting up big numbers on both kinds of targets. He is one of the top players in the game at catching throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a superb catcher who is contested.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is slot specialist. He's lined up in this position on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays to date. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets, and the fifth-highest EPA for run stops among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him an important part of his team's defensive line. He's struggled to stop passes from the outside, and his EPA against this type of target is negative. This is due to him playing with linebackers and safety who aren't able to match Hilton's speed, size or ability to run routes.
