Speedy wideouts are among the biggest benefits of moving into the slot since they have an easier time getting open downfield when their route isn't covered by a linebacker or cornerback. The proportion of snaps that a receiver makes in the slot is an excellent indicator of their ability to play deep routes. It's not always a true reflection of a receiver's abilities because some receivers are better in the slot, but they can't play more deep.

Alshon Jeffrey, for example leads the league in goals per game (4.8), but is only 6th in the slot that receives scores (58.5). This is because most of his targets have been thrown from the outside and it is difficult to get a first down on a wide-open, deep route in that situation.

On the other hand, some receivers excel at playing inside and can't do much on the perimeter. Robby Anderson, for example, was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He completed 74% of his routes in the slot, compared to only 26% on boundary routes. This is a significant difference and illustrates how much more efficient he is when aligned in the slot.

Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, plays inside the majority of the time on his passing downs and is among the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). He also ran 51% of his perimeter routes and is a pro in one-on-1 coverage.

Speed receivers are more effective when they align inside. They are able to be targeted further down the field and often face one-on-1 coverage. You'll find names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper and Julio Jones in our top five.

On the flip side there are some excellent slot cornerbacks like McDuffie and Moore in this group. Both have been able create pressures in the passing game and have McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles. Moore having the best tackle stop performance on this list (-3.5). Through using McDuffie in the slot when they run nickel or dime packages, and then placing him on the outside in base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his abilities. In addition, Moore's capability to stop big run plays has been an enormous advantage when playing in the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While top NFL receivers like Golden Tate, Larry Fitzgerald, and Baldwin excel on the perimeter but their slot counterparts are just as effective. Wide receivers with a high slot grade have touchdowns that are about the same as those on the perimeter. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to outside and slot receivers compared to other inside options, such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

It's also interesting to see a receiver such as CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022 since he plays slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of them. He's actually running more routes in the slot than a lot of the players listed on this chart. This is a great way to create matchup benefits for your team. It also helps clarify why Lamb ranks as the highest-graded slot receiver in our system this season.

He also plays the X-position, and can make big plays from outside. Lamb isn't as powerful as some of the other players in this list, however he's still a high-graded wide receiver who fits well into the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman, a different player who can put up big numbers with targets of all kinds is a different example. He is one of the best in the league when it comes to catching throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a fantastic contested-catch player.

Another player on this list who's an authentic slot specialist is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton who has been positioned in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive snaps this season. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA among cornerbacks who are aligned in the slot, making him an important player in the defense of his team. He's had a difficult time stopping passes from the outside and his EPA against this kind of target is negative. This is a result of playing alongside poor linebackers and safeties who aren't able to match Hilton's size and speed. He also has a great ability to run routes.
