Avon also published non-romance and hardcover paperbacks but these were transferred to the Hearst Corporation's other publisher Morrow after Hearst bought Avon in 1959.

In this book, Darrow creates an interesting background story for Avon and echoes the jovial style of dialogue that Blake's 7 was known for pretty well, but unless are an avid fan of the show, it's likely not for you. The story is centered around the relationship between Avon, Vila and their mutual respect and dislike for the other's ruthlessness and cowardice.

There are some truly captivating scenes as Avon is faced with the tough choices to protect his team, and this reveals his softer side. The characters are given a amount of depth and each has their own unique personality which makes them more likable. This is a tale that will leave you wanting more. The writing is flawless, and the narrative has a real sense of the place. It's a masterpiece by an author at the height of her skill.

However Manko also demonstrates how its rhetoric covered up what was actually an economic concept that was radical.

Avon's dedication to bringing the best of commercial fiction to the broadest possible audience remains today. Avon books are innovative, diverse and include some of the most exciting authors of contemporary literature. The Author

Avon sold millions of books per year in the 1950s. Avon's colorful covers and mass appeal allowed them to market pulp fiction that mainstream publishing houses would have looked down on. In fact they were so popular that they were acquired by the Hearst Corporation in 1959.

The Hearst Corporation changed the direction of Avon's publications by adding more literary works to their line. Avon began releasing digest-format publications in series like Murder Mystery Monthly or Modern Short Story Monthly. Some of these are highly prized today due to their rarity and quality.

The sexually explicit novel The Flame and the Flower by Kathleen Woodiwiss, published in 1972, marked a shift in the direction of Avon. Avon would go on to publish a variety of sexy romantic novels such as The Wolf and the Dove in 1974 and Rosemary Rogers’ Sweet Savage Love later. These new novels made the romances with a purple-colored prosed of earlier Avon romances appear tame.

Eventually, Avon would become a leading name in the romance industry and even invent the bodice ripper. In the 1970's, they had multiple romance books earn places on bestseller lists.
