Smart keys aren't only an excellent convenience. They also make it more difficult for car thieves steal your vehicle. Instead of broadcasting the same frequency signal as traditional key fobs, smart keys broadcast various encrypted signals each time they unlock doors remotely or open the trunk. A computer in your car is able to detect the frequency shifts and only allows it to start if the appropriate key matches the latest signal.
