What is a Defra Approved Stove?

A defra-approved stove is a wood-burning stove which has been approved by the UK Government Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs. This permits them to be used in Smoke Control Areas within the UK.

Defra approved stoves, also referred as Defra smoke exempt stoves, are wood burning and multi fuel stoves that meet the emission standards of the government for use in Smoke Control Areas. These new standards don't prohibit wood stoves from being employed in smoke control areas however, they limit the amount of smoke that can be produced by the stoves.

Defra approved disinfectants are able to disinfect and clean hard surfaces, including buildings, farm equipment, crates and vehicles. The Defra approved disinfectants list is maintained by the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) which is charged an annual fee to approve the new back-to-back approval trade names for disinfectants. APHA may also retest the effectiveness of disinfectants at any time. The results can be added to the list of approved disinfectants, without the need to submit a sample.

Approved for Smoke Control Areas

Smoke Control Areas are found in several areas of the UK. This means that you can only use exempt equipment or burn fuels that are approved. This is to help reduce air pollution caused by burning unauthorised fuels, which can cause nuisance smoke and ash builds up. To avoid breaking the law or getting penalized, you must burn wood logs using an approved DEFRA stove, fire or Defra stove fireplace. They have passed the rigorous DEFRA emissions tests and have met the minimal smoke levels allowed in Smoke Control Areas. Look for the DEFRA Logo on the website of the manufacturer or in their showrooms when choosing the stove. If they've got the DEFRA logo, then you can be sure that the stove is Defra approved to be used in smoke-free areas and can be used to burn wood in these areas. It is still necessary to have a suitable chimney lining, however, the smaller 5kW stoves can be equipped with a 5" twin-wall stainless steel liner instead of the standard 6" liner.

If you do not have an DEFRA approved stove, you may be able to obtain an approval from your local authority to burn non-approved fuels in your home. You'll need to look on the DEFRA site to see if an exemption is available. There are a few guidelines to follow for installing an alarm for smoke.
