Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an ode to the classic sextet structure and it was a more consistent, more powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. The more edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the maturation in the group. Bobby Kimball's growing proficiency was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard work was also sharper, more complex and less akin to previous efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live concert in Amsterdam that was released as a set of two CDs called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a new studio album just a few months after and then embarked on a world tour to promote it. During this period, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old demos and tapes in search of a new record featuring songs that had never been recorded before. It was released as a double-album titled Then & Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band without one single track titled "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and vocalist Williams suffered from a bad case of laryngitis which hampered his singing. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.
