Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an ode to the traditional sextet style and a more consistent, stronger effort with a harder edge. Its more punk-rock sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's improved virtuosity on drums, and a more mature, confident vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work was more refined, sharper and less cloying than previously recorded recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live concert in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released their new studio album just a few months after, and went on a world tour to promote it. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to find songs that had never been recorded prior to.
