Titration

A highly experienced psychiatrist consultant will conduct a thorough assessment of your ADHD. This includes a complete medical history and an evaluation using the standard ADHD questionnaires and rating scales.

After your examination, you will be advised if medication is considered to be beneficial in your case. This will happen during your follow-up appointment (which can be done in person, via video link or by phone). Your clinician will discuss the various options for medications available. If you decide to start taking medication, we can help you the opportunity to increase your dosage to maximize the benefits/side effects balance for you.

This process could take a few weeks and it involves gradually altering your child's dosage until the appropriate balance is achieved. It is not uncommon to have to titrate up to three different medicines before you can find the one that best suits your child's ADHD. It what is titration adhd important that parents take part in the titration process and keep an eye out for their child's behavior so that they can inform the doctor whether the medication is helping or causing adverse effects.

If you do not decide to return to NHS treatment, your medication will be provided with an individual prescription that you will need to pay for at the pharmacy (this is not included in your consultation fees). You'll be required to attend regular appointments every six months to monitor your medication, which includes pulse and blood pressure readings. Annual reviews are also required.

Follow-up appointments

Once the evaluation has been completed, you will be able to make appointment with the psychiatrist as necessary. The appointment usually takes place via a zoom video call, although in certain cases it might be possible to do an audio only consultation (again at an extra cost).

We will then go over treatment options and choose the most appropriate, customized ADHD medication titration. This will include a review and discussion of your medication dosage and any side effects that you may be experiencing. These titrations cost PS150 for face-toface sessions and PS60 by video or phone consultation. Medication costs are additional and are paid directly to the pharmacy.

The doctor will also ask you about your family history and the impact that your ADHD symptoms impact your life, as well as any relationship issues you might be facing or any other mental health problems that you may be suffering from. Or you can wait two weeks to consider the implications of the diagnosis and the options available to you.

We recommend that if you are unsure of your preferences, talk to your GP prior to scheduling your private assessment. Some providers have different policies on whether or not they require an GP letter. Make sure that your GP accepts a Shared Care Agreement, which means you will be referred to them once you leave the clinic to get a prescriptions for medication.

Medication

For many who wish to obtain an official diagnosis of ADHD treatment is a key part of their journey. It can be difficult to get prescriptions from psychiatrists on the NHS. NHS waiting lists are notoriously long and GPs may be reluctant to refer patients to specialist services.

One method to circumvent this is to request your GP to refer you through Right to Choose (see psychiatry-uk and ADHD 360). This means that you can choose an organization that offers an assessment and titration. This can reduce your wait time by a significant amount and is more convenient when you are working and have a hectic schedule.

Once you've been recommended, your physician will evaluate you to determine if you need medication adjustment. You will be asked to fill out forms that differ by doctor but the most common ones are self-report forms and medical histories from childhood to adulthood. They will help your physician identify any factors that might indicate that you shouldn't be taking ADHD medication if prescribed.

If you are titrated, the medication will consist of a mixture of stimulants and nonstimulant medications. They will be carefully tested and monitored to find the most suitable combination for you, taking into consideration any existing conditions you have. The titration for adhd can be a lengthy process and may require multiple appointments before you are stable.

Based on the type of medication you are taking, follow-up appointments can be scheduled either monthly or quarterly. Your physician will make sure whether you are stable on the medication, record any side effects that you've experienced and make any necessary adjustments to ensure that you remain on a safe dose. You will be required to attend an annual review and a routine health examination which includes blood pressure, pulse, and weight measurements.

Some patients may be content with their medication, and don't need to discuss their titration process further. However, for those who require further discussions regarding their titration and treatment plan it is possible that they will be passed back to the private clinic that made their initial assessment. If this occurs, the titration consultation will be part of their consultation fee, and they will be given their medication on a private prescription (see Consultation fees above). This could cost more than an NHS prescription because the pharmacy will charge for the medication.
